The most widely consumed banana in the world is the Cavendish. Wild bananas come from India and southeast Asia and have large seeds but Cavendish bananas were bred to be seedless. Because of this each Cavendish banana tree is genetically identical to the original plant cultivated in the early 1900’s. This lack of genetic diversity left the Cavendish banana vulnerable to disease. The Cavendish banana will eventually go extinct.
