Phoenix is the capital and most populous city in the American state of Arizona, with 1,608,139 residents as of 2020. It is the fifth-most populous city in the United States, and one of only two state capitals with a population of more than one million residents, along with Austin. The metropolitan area is the 11th largest by population in the United States, with approximately 4.85 million people as of 2020. [1]

Coverage[]

Phoenix is featured in The Invaders starting in 1 month after people.

PhoenixDark

Asphalt still retain sunlight in the dark.

The disaster begins with heatwave from the pavement which cause the average area temperature to increase by 15 degree Fahrenheit. Materials like concrete absorbs about 60% of the Sun's heat and light but for asphalt it can absorb 95% which can retain much of the heat after dark due to its density. Kaley O'Kelly stated that even in the time of humans, it has been hot as 122 degrees with the tarmac of the airport being blazing and mentioned urban heat island where the sun goes down and the air tried to lift from the pavement.

But the heat is evaporating the precious supply of water, especially waste treated water. Kristine Uhlman said that the water will go to the treatment plant which is used for landscaping, irrigation, and discharged to many rivers of phoenix. But without people, all the treatment plants have all shut down long ago. Kristine Uhlman continues that thousands of manmade lakes would dry up within weeks while Kaley O'Kelly stated that the habitat would going to die and it will going brown pretty quickly.

PhoenixCompletelyDriedLakes

The lakes of Phoenix have completely dried.

In 6 months after people, the lakes of Phoenix have run dry with the next being the rivers. Kristine Uhlman said that with the riverbeds dried, it will cause sand to blow away and to cause the natural habitats of Phoenix such as animals, riparian vegetation, and animals to die from dehydration as the desert reclaims the territory.

In 10 years after people Phoenix is bone-dry and the surrounding desert threatens to wipe Phoenix off the map. The show stated that it have happened before saying that Phoenix was built on a 600-mile complex of irrigation ditches left by Native Americans called the Hohokam, who disappeared around the year 1400 with the population as high as 50,000. Kaley O'Kelly stated that the disappearance of the Hohokam still remains a mystery and it is believed that there was either a drought, a massive flood, or a famine.

PhoenixSand

Water starts to infiltrate the buildings.

For Phoenix, it is vulnerable to the same forces; the recurrent invasions from the summertime torrents of soil, sand, and dust which is called Haboob, an Arabic name for sandstorm. Kristine Uhlman stated it is a huge dust storm that happens in Phoenix while Kaley O'Kelly stated that a haboob can be as wide as 60 miles and as tall as 3,500 feet. With man-made rivers and irrigation canals have long vanished, the top soil is dry and loose which adds more dust to the wind and makes dust storms with the show stated more damaging than before. Kaley O'Kelly stated that the buildings would be blown out by rocks from the dust storms. The show continues that with acres of dust invade the broken buildings and the office floors become deserts, it only dry for a while because after dust storms the monsoon rains arrived which is triggered by the heat rising from the Phoenix pavement. Kristine Uhlman stated that when the monsoons arrive, there are mini tornadoes, downdrafts from the storms, and can rip out all the dried trees within a matter of moments. The rain mix with the sand and dust which fills up the broken buildings with mud. Even in the time of humans, emergency services would've cleared the debris but without people, the mud fills the offices of Phoenix's business district which can creates another problem, mud is heavier than dirt and when there's too much mud, the buildings won't survive for long.

In 100 years after people, the 90-square block business district is a chaos of mud and debris. Kaley O'Kelly restated that the dust that comes through with sandstorms and the rain that comes through to form mud causing Phoenix to look different than today. These mud have cause the floors to crash and tumble, and the piled up debris collapses the towers from within. One of the towers is the Chase Tower, which collapse from the mud-filled floors. The shattered glass of the collapse buildings will be taken up by the next sandstorm which can slice through other structures until Phoenix is desolate.

Its fate is revealed in 2,000 years after people when the desert that buried Phoenix has transformed into a vast savannah cause from the 2,000 years of rain and snow to recharged the water table, bringing the underground aquifer to the surface and feeding the rivers again. Kristine Uhlman lastly stated it will be beautiful with lush paradise of wild creatures in which they return and thrive in the now savannah desert.

Transformation[]

PhoenixSavannah

Phoenix would have transformed from a desert to a savannah.

As stated from The Invaders, the desert have reclaimed Phoenix which is desolated in 100 years after people by the cause by mud weight and debris slicing through the city in the next sandstorm. Although Phoenix have returned to the desert, the desert itself would have transformed into a vast savannah cause from 2,000 years of rain and snow that recharged the water table, this brings the underground aquifer to the surface, feeding the rivers again and the wildlife returns and thrive in the savannah.
