The Florianturm in Dortmund, Germany, about 45 miles northwest of Cologne, is a 721 foot tall TV and observation tower. It is the tallest structure in the city, but, how long will it last without people?
1 day after people: The power shuts down and the lights go out over Dortmund.
5 years after people: The tower is doing fine, at least for now. Only a few plants are climbing the tower and animals are living inside.
25 years after people: Some of the glass in the observation pod has broken allow water to come inside.
100 years after people: The tower is doing surprisingly well. The tower was made of solid, non-reinforced, concrete. The tower will survive for many more years.
150 years after people: The antenna on top of the tower has become weak and is swaying in the breeze. The swaying is causing it to become loose. Finally, the antenna breaks off and falls to the ground.
400 years after people: The observation pod is in dire straights. Rain has leaked in the windows, causing the steel supports to rust. 400 years of neglect is destroying the tower. The pod snaps off, dropping down the shaft, crushing it beneath.
