Lygodium (climbing fern) is a genus of about 40 species of ferns, native to tropical regions across the world, with a few temperate species in eastern Asia and eastern North America.[1] Lygodium microphyllum is a climbing fern originating in tropical Africa, Southeast Asia, Melanesia and Australia. It is an invasive weed in Florida where it invades open forest and wetland areas.[2]

After the introduction of Brazilian pepper in Miami, it then soon joined by Lygodium, a climbing vine from Australia which can grow to 100 feet. Betsy Von Holle stated that in the absence of humans, weathering would make cracks on all kinds of human structures and a little spore of the climbing fern could seed inside and then grow up an entire building or across the bridge. She continues that after 50 years, Lygodium will covered the entire structures and over time, it will pulling down buildings, bridges, and other human structures.
